Who should be in charge of AI in the company?

In an SME, not a dedicated role: one person from the existing team, the AI lead, for about an hour a week, with management setting the rules. The AI lead answers questions, checks that the rules are followed and reviews progress with management each month. The classic mistake is to appoint a “head of AI” with neither time nor decision-making power.
An outside provider can support the AI lead (settings, difficult questions, monthly reviews, rule updates) but not replace them: they do not see your files day to day. A dedicated role makes sense later, when several projects run in parallel in a company of several hundred people.
